Tips on your Grant Application.

If you think you're going to get involved with grant applications then you should first cover all the basics. Writing a grant application can be a daunting task to some and because it can be tough you put it off. Don't put off your grant application and follow these tips below before even start the process:

  • Before writing your grant application it is wise to read any accompanying instructions because these are likely not optional, but gospel. When applying for anything, a mistake people make is not following the guidelines. In the event of a lot of applications, this will be used to throw some, maybe a great many, in the bin; less work for the review board!

  • If you have trouble understanding anything in the forms/ documents you have make sure you contact someone before writing, namely someone in your institution who can better walk you through the process.

  • Figure out what documentation you need before you start because some documents may be difficult to track down and if you start early you will have a better chance of getting them.

  • Make sure you have a good idea of the deadlines and procedures of your businesses institution because the last thing you want is to send off your application late and miss the deadline.

All right, now you should have gone through the above steps in order to do the pre-grant application process, now it is time to sift through some tips on actually following through with your writing. It is the actual writing process that gets most people worried when dealing with grant applications so making sure you abide by the following tips should give you more comfort and security in knowing that you've done what you can:

  • Design/ develop a solid hypothesis. If you are hoping for a solid grant application then you are going to need a solid hypothesis to accompany it. Your cover letter should clearly indicate what your hypothesis is and why it is important.

  • Show your research and show why you need the grant. Without facts to back up your claims your grant application will never make it through the beginning phases of the review board. You need to show what research backs you up and prove that you are an ideal candidate.

  • Write to your specific audience. Your grant application should not just be a generic letter of request. You need to write it to a specific audience and make it as personal as possible. A generic grant application seems unimportant and looks like there was no thought behind it.

  • Be persuasive. We all learned how to write persuasively back in grade school, now it is time to use those skills to further your grant application and show why you and your research needs a grant.

Armed with these tips you should be well on your way to writing an effective and innovative grant application. You need to write with confidence but also with your end result in mind. Grant applications don't have to be scary, in fact they can be fun!
