Deciding Between Whether to Buy a Franchise Business or Start Your Own Business.

Everyone loves the story of the entrepreneur , it all starts out in the local newspaper- the story of someone who saw an opportunity , decided to buy a franchise business and then became a millionaire. It's such stories that inspire us and drive us towards becoming entrepreneurial successes. However before you launch out on a bid to become the next entrepreneurial success story it is important you consider the options and decide whether to start your own business from scratch or to go out and buy a franchise business from a franchisor.

This decision is governed by a number of factors any aspiring entrepreneur should be aware of. Understanding these factors will help you decide on the appropriate approach either to owning your own independent business or starting a franchise business.



  • Cost - Cost is a primary and important factor not only in business but in almost everything else in life. When it comes to the cost of buying a franchise business it might seem a little bit too expensive compared to starting your own business from scratch but you have to consider not only the short term costs but the long term ones as well. If you decide you can foot the bill and you can benefit more from the opportunities a franchise business has to offer then it is advisable to go the way of buying a franchise business otherwise you can start your own business from scratch.
  • Experience - Some business fields require a larger measure of experience than others. Venturing into a business without prior knowledge or experience in the field is a hazardous affair. Of course you can learn on the job or as the business grows but this is an expensive choice. Buying a franchise business gives you the opportunity to benefit from the training and support offered by the franchisor. It also helps you avoid common pitfalls associated with the business- that way you can profit from a franchise business with little mistakes.
  • Name Recognition - A franchise business usually comes with an easily recognizable and popular name.. The brand name of a franchise business is on of the major reasons for purchasing a franchise in the first place without an easily recognizable name you may be much better off saving yourself the money and starting your own business from scratch.
  • Competition - The threat of the competition in a business is all too real. The competition can knock your business out of contention before it even starts. A franchise business in an area with stiff competition has the potential to succeed better due to the name recognition of the franchise business. People will readily identify with a popular franchise business even if they are other ready alternatives. An independent business on the other hand might not be so lucky.
  • Support & Training - All businesses require some form of support and a franchise business is much more likely to gain the required support of a franchisor. A business starting from scratch may have to rely on support that is paid for and which may not necessarily pertain to the particular situation at hand.



Starting your own business has its advantages and disadvantages and so does buying a franchise business. In the end it is up to the franchisee to determine their own circumstances and which option would suit them better.
