Data Recovery Software - Suggestions

Try the popular undelete program found at http://hccweb1.bai.ne.jp/~hcj58401/

Preferably using another computer (not the one containing the deleted file), download it and unzip it. The result is a single .exe file which can be run from a floppy diskette, no installation needed.

Also try OnTrack EasyRecovery: http://www.ontrack.co.uk

Data Recovery

Backing up files regularly can be a great way to secure your data and ensure that everything is not lost when you experience a computer breakdown.

Even if your computer contracts a virus, data recovery can always be achieved.

The best hard drive recovery solution, is to restore the lost files from a tape or CD-ROM backup.

Another solution is to get hard drive recovery software. Hard drive recovery software can help restore files that were deleted, as long as they are not very corrupted or overwritten. It can also repair bad sectors on your disk drive. In the case of serious physical damage however, you may need to consult a specialist.

Important: *Do not run any program or utility that writes to the affected media or changes it in any way, if you need your data back*.

The data recovery softwares that do recover data are limited to addressing regular scenarios, not necessarily your unique situation.

Warning: Installation advice from internet sites can be irrelevant or incorrect.

Typical errors:

1. No warning about handling and ESD issues.

2. No guidance regarding what sort of noises are acceptable vs. noises that indicate device failure. Drives that make mechanical fault noises should not be repeatedly powered on and tested: it makes them worse.

3. Advice to physically manipulate a problem drive such as 'twisting it quickly'.

4. Misleading information about Windows utilities and partitions.

-> The first, basic question of dealing with any media problem is "What would happen if I lost access to the data forever?"
Then proceed with extreme caution. If the data is worth thousands, it might be worth taking it to a specialist.
